Karolina Perekitko happy with improved climbing in 2024

Karolina Perekitko achieved another impressive result last Sunday at the Alpes Grésivaudan Classic (1.1), securing her eighth Top 10 finish of the 2024 season. Known for her climbing abilities, the Polish rider had eagerly anticipated this race. “I was really looking forward to the start of this race because I really love climbing. Ever since the race has existed, I wanted to compete in it but it hadn’t been possible yet. I’m very happy to have been able to be here,” she told DirectVelo after finishing in the Top 5.

The race, as expected, proved challenging, with the peloton thinning significantly after the Col du Barioz, whose summit came at the 46th kilometre of the 123-kilometre route. By the time they reached the foot of the final climb to Chamrousse, only around twenty riders remained. “The last climb was very good for me, but I wasn’t having my best day as I couldn’t keep up with the top four. I tried to manage my effort and do my best until the end,” Perekitko said.

Reflecting on her season so far, Perekitko expressed satisfaction. “I’m very happy with my season up to now. I’ve experienced many changes this winter. I’ve focused a lot on climbing, and I’ve lost a few kilos.” Despite her progress, she recognises that she still needs to improve her positioning, which cost her a better overall result in the recent Tour of Spain. “In every race, I try to develop and make as few mistakes as possible. Today, I won the sprint from the group, so I’m satisfied. I’m improving more and more,” she added.

After a season with Groupe Abadie-Le Boulou, Perekitko joined Winspace, a move facilitated by Jean-Christophe Barbotin, who found the sponsor in late October. “He first signed Aurela Nerlo. She mentioned me to him because he was looking for a climber,” explained the 25-year-old. Perekitko has already committed to Winspace for the 2025 season, continuing her development with the team. Perekitko extended her contract for another year early in April. Her next goal is to represent her team’s colours at the Tour des Pyrénées from 14th to 16th June.
