Elisa Longo Borghini to leave Lidl-Trek at the end of 2024

Elisa Longo Borghini will not renew her contract with Lidl-Trek, opting to join a new team in 2025, as reported by Gazzetta dello Sport. This surprising news, verified through an interview with team manager Luca Guercilena, marks the end of a significant chapter for the 32-year-old Italian cyclist, who has been with the American team for six seasons, having joined from Wiggle-High5 in 2019.

Longo Borghini, the current Italian champion in both time trial and road race disciplines, has achieved considerable success during her tenure with Lidl-Trek. Over the past six seasons, she has claimed 23 victories, including a memorable win at the Paris-Roubaix in 2022 and a second triumph at the Tour of Flanders earlier this year, adding to her 2015 victory.

Lidl-Trek’s team manager, Luca Guercilena, confirmed the news and commented on her departure: “Elisa Longo Borghini has made the decision to leave the team at the end of the season, despite our desire to extend her contract with Lidl-Trek. This is part of the sport. Together, we have achieved great results, thanks to the support from the team and her teammates. Lidl-Trek will continue to commit to being a leading team in women’s cycling, focusing on scouting young riders, supporting great champions, and promoting equity in sport. We wish Longo Borghini all the best for the upcoming seasons.”

Her departure will undoubtedly leave a significant gap in Lidl-Trek, as she has been a pivotal figure and a source of inspiration for her teammates. Her impressive palmarès with Lidl-Trek reflects her dedication and exceptional talent.

Currently, it appears that UAE Team ADQ are the frontrunners to sign Longo Borghini for the 2025 season.
